Let's Merienda with Delicious Oreo Churros!

Today I'm sharing a fun twist to an already fun recipe. Everybody loves Churros right? Well with the help of Nabisco Oreo's, I am mixing things up and making Oreo Churros! Yup, I said it. Oreo Churros, it's like the best of both worlds. Nabisco has come up with some fun and delicious Latino-inspired recipes that are perfect treats for the family during merienda. Keep reading to see my fun twist. 
With Hispanic Heritage Month upon us, September 15-October 15, I get to share some recipes that are perfect for la merienda. If you don't know what la merienda is, it can be translated as afternoon snack time. For me, la merienda is after school when we sit down to do homework, talk about our day and of course enjoy a snack. 
Here is what you will need to make these delicious Oreo Churros:

1 qt. (4 cups) oil
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
12 OREO Cookies, finely crushed, divided
1/4 cup sugar, divided
3 cups baking mix
1 cup hot tap water
Here are the super easy-to-follow instructions:

HEAT oil in large saucepan or deep fryer to 375°F.
COMBINE cinnamon, and 3 Tbsp. EACH cookie crumbs and sugar. Reserve for later use.
WHISK baking mix with remaining cookie crumbs and sugar in medium bowl until blended; stir in hot water. Spoon into piping bag fitted with 1/2-inch star tip. Use to pipe about 1/4 of the dough into 2-inch-long strips into hot oil, using sharp knife or kitchen shears to cut dough into pieces. Cook 2 to 3 min. or until golden brown, turning frequently. Remove from oil with slotted spoon; drain on paper towels. Repeat in 3 batches with remaining dough

TOSS churros with reserved cookie crumb mixture.

And now for my twist to the recipe. I took a slice of rich and creamy cheesecake and added a crunchy warm Oreo Churro. To top it off, I drizzled some cajeta. In my eyes cajeta is good on almost everything, so before I made the Oreo churros, I knew I was going to drizzle cajeta.

Turn Up the Yum for Dia Del Niño with this Oreo Dulce de Leche Parfait

Do you remember when you were a kid and the minute you got home from school you would drop your backpack on the floor and head straight for the cookie jar? I remembering sticking my hand in and just hoping that there was at least one Oreo left. For as long as I remember Oreo's have been a part of la merienda and in my home, they still are. Seeing my daughters smile as I place an Oreo in front of them as they sit down to do homework, makes me smile too. Oreo's are good by themselves or with a glass of milk, but they really shine in desserts. In this Oreo Dulce de Leche parfait, they're super easy to make and SO DELICIOUS! 


The thing I love about parfaits is that you can make a large version in a trifle for a party or a small cup parfait. I decided to make small versions this time since I knew my kiddos were going to be enjoying them. But I can't wait to make this as a trifle! Also check out how few ingredients are needed to make this super quick and delicious dessert. 


  • Oreo's (about 12, divided)
  • 1/3 cup Mexican Caramel spread (Dulce de Leche)
  • 2 cups thawed frozen whipped topping
  • 1 cup chopped cooked frozen ripe plantains (maduros)
  • Parfait cups

There really is not much prep needed for making these parfaits. The only ingredient that requires a little bit of work, is the frozen plantains or maduros. These need to be fried in a little bit of oil for a few minutes on each side. I've never bought these before to cook myself and I was really surprised at how tasty they are coming from the frozen section. They crisp up perfectly and add a nice flavor and texture to the parfait. 


  1. Mix the caramel or Dulce de Leche and 1/2 cup whipped topping in medium bowl. Stir in 1 cup of the remaining whipped topping.
  2. Chop cookies and maduros into quarters. Set aside a few quartered cookies to top off and garnish. 
  3. Next, layer the parfait glasses with a heaping spoon of the whipped topping/dulce de leche mix. Then add a layer of chopped cookies and maduros; repeat layers.
  4. Last, top with remaining whipped topping and finally garnish with quartered cookies.

That's it! These are a perfect dessert or treat for everyday merienda or to celebrate Dia Del Niño.
