Just in time for Halloween, the perfect family friendly scary movie is here, in theaters now, and it’s so good. Last weekend I got to not only screen The House With A Clock In It’s Walls, but we also had a wonderful picnic lunch, met with director Eli Roth and checked out an escape room experience at the Americana on Brand. Yeah, it was as cool as it sounds.
Okay so first things first let me tell you how much me and my girls loved this movie. So, my 8 and 9 year old have been super curious about scary movies lately. When I was their age I was watching some super scary stuff, thanks to my older sister and I just don’t think my girls could handle Nightmare on Elm Street.
Director Eli Roth said this movie, The House With A Clock In It’s Walls was created with just that age range and scary movie amateur level, in mind. This movie was made to be an introduction to something scary for the young ones. Let me be clear though, it isn’t just a scary movie, it is so much more. It is funny, of course, how could it not have humor with Jack Black as one of the leads. It also has a lot of heart and I really appreciated the message that it sends to kids of accepting and owning your own weirdness.
As I was listening to Director Eli Roth talk about the importance of creating something for the young kids, as an introductory scary movie, I asked him what were some of his introductory scary movies. He named a few that I didn’t know, and he named some that I did, like The Goonies and Gremlins and I could not agree more. Those were some of the first “scary” movies that I showed to my girls too.
The House With A Clock In It’s Walls is going to be one of those "firsts” for a lot of kids and it’s a good one. You can definitely get a feeling that this movie wasn’t created by someone who doesn’t know horror and it’s done so well.
