Are you one of the millions that went to see Marvel Studios Captain Marvel? We got to see an advanced screening last week and by we, I mean my 10 year old daughter and I. Who else would be a better date for Captain Marvel? Of course I want to take my daughter to see a female superhero movie, but what we saw was so much more.
Whenever I take my daughter to a movie, as we drive away I always ask, What was your favorite part?
My favorite part was the 90’s nostalgia throwbacks. The music, the city, the clothes, the whole throwback to the 90’s was awesome. It was so cool, to see parts of my childhood up on the big screen. Yes, I know it was just the backdrop to a very important part of an even bigger franchise, but either way, it was my favorite part.
My daughter’s favorite part was Goose, the cat. I don’t even want to explain Goose, the cat to you, in case you have yet to see the film. But, I will say, he was an integral part of the story.
Oh, and I have to say I was surprised at Brie Larson. You know, I was having a hard time picturing her as a superhero, but she did a great job. As I’m sitting there watching the movie, I never had any doubt in her. She totally pulled it off!
The hard part about movie reviews for me, is that I never want to spoil anything for anyone. But I always want to talk about it with you, if you’ve already seen it. Does that make sense?
I know that there are a lot of reviews out there that are saying that this film is a “chick flick” and specifically geared towards young women. I will beg to differ. This film serves as the origin for the Avengers movies that we all know and love, that’s all that needs to be said. Go in with an open mind and you’ll enjoy the intergalactic fighting, 90’s soundtrack, and the famous Marvel humor.
Sidenote: Yes, I am a mother to two little girls and I think it’s important for them to see female superheros. Yes, I know it’s fiction, but still, important. I remember looking over and seeing my girls eyes light up as they watched Wonder Woman on the big screen. Yes, I know it’s a competing studio, I’m just saying, the impact of seeing female superheroes on our young girls is notable.
